Five years ago the Earth collided with an interstellar object, but no one noticed

In October 2017, astronomers discovered the first in human history interstellar object trapped in the solar system - it was an asteroid Oumuamua, the origin of which is still a lot of rumors. It turns out that people are faced with objects from distant galaxies before, but simply did not notice it - so, at least, consider Harvard University researchers. According to them, collided with the Earth's atmosphere in January 2014 is also a meteor interstellar traveler.

Five years ago the Earth collided with an interstellar object, but no one noticed

This is the conclusion astronomers Avi Loeb and Amir Siraj, carefully examine the data NEO NASA research center of the meteorite impact in the first half of 2014. They found that the space object flew toward Earth at a speed of 60 kilometers per second, and was very small - the width does not exceed one meter. When the researchers calculated the trajectory of its flight, it became clear that the object was not orbital tied to the sun, that is, initially it was not in our solar system.

For all these reasons, researchers have concluded that the interstellar objects can be quite frequent guests of the solar system, but astronomers simply do not notice them. But in vain - they can carry a lot of interesting information, or even deliver the life of the distant planets.

The reaction of the scientific community

Upon hearing the opinion of the researchers, the astronomical community was divided into two camps. One of the experts believe that scientists too early to draw conclusions - an astronomer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA Eric Mamayek treat them with skepticism, because they were made in the dimensions of only one event. However, among scientists, there are those who support the opinion of his Harvard colleagues.

I think it would be reasonable to conclude that this high speed object does have an interstellar origin. Interstellar objects can be quite common.

Kate Wolf, an astrophysicist at the University of Arizona

Who knows, maybe one of the interstellar travelers will ship from extraterrestrial civilizations? After all, astronomers have speculated that the asteroid Oumuamua was sent by aliens.
